In the summer of 1999, legendary choreographer Paul Taylor received a
commission from the Kennedy Center to create a new modern dance based on
jazz music. Mr. Taylor was unable to find inspiration with this
style, but, happening upon some Paragon Ragtime Orchestra recordings,
decided to mold his new work upon Paragon's performances of the pre-jazz
music of the Ragtime Era. The resulting twenty minute dance suite,
dubbed Oh, You Kid, went into rehearsal in the fall of 1999,
and was premiered in a sold-out Kennedy Center run in February, 2000. The critically acclaimed work features the Paul Taylor Dance Company on stage with Mr. Benjamin
conducting PRO "live" in the pit. Oh, You Kid was subsequently performed at the American Dance Festival, and, entering the Taylor Company's repertoire, has since been performed on tour throughout the world. The work has also been revived by the PTDC several times at New York's City Center, most recently in March 2006. |
